find out more about Eday

Geordie and Anna's
Orkney Chairs, Eday.
The Orkney chair is a traditional piece of furniture dating back many hundreds of years. Indeed, many examples dating back to those times can be found and are particularly valuable.

It is easy to imagine how the chair would have been contructed those many years ago with the limited resources available. With no indigenous trees on the Orkney Islands, the frame must have been made from driftwood - clearly a valuable resource, and the back was made from a more readily available material - straw

To keep draughts out, the chair has wings, which are sometimes extended to form a hood over the top of the chair - particularly cosy when reading in front of the fire.
